This book is a complete remake of his out-of-print 1992 book "Woodcarving in the Scandinavian Style" - now in color & with much finer printing quality - it has an additional 20 patterns of Scandinavian characters - a new section on carving a Dalecarlian Horse - and color sections on painting both the horse and Oskar.
Harley Refsal - internationally
recognized carver and author of "Carving Trolls and Other
Scandinavian Characters", and "Woodcarving In The Scandinavian
Style" - takes an in depth look at the history and current
presence of Scandinavian-style carving in Scandinavia and in the
United States. His name is so integrally linked with the revival
of this carving style that it is rapidly becoming known as the
"Refsal style." With a knife and just a gouge or two,
the reader will learn to bring to life a typical Scandinavian
figure called "Oskar" and traditional Delacarlian horse.
Clear directions, front and side-view patterns, and step-by-step
photographs show the reader exactly how to make a few simple,
well-placed cuts, leaving large flat planes intact on the wood-carved
figure. The effect is rich with folk-art charm. Generally, no
sanding or smoothing is used, and the reader will be delighted
with the way the figures show lively personality and character.
Plus, Art and Technique of Scandinavian-Style Woodcarving is filled
with extras Including:
A history of Scandinavian woodcarving from the days of the Vikings
to the modern age.
Photographs and drawings of ancient wooden stave churches, domestic
buildings, and medieval decorative pieces.
Biographies of the greatest of Scandinavia's 19th and 20th century
figure carvers, with photographs of their works in various carving
styles. 51 Scandinavian patterns along with samples of the finished
carvings.
This is the figure carver's handbook
that will be enjoyed by both the beginning and advanced carver.

Harley Refsal teaches Scandinavian Studies at Luther
College in Decorah, Iowa, where he also holds the title Resident
Fellow in Scandinavian Folk Art. He is an internationally recognized
figure carver, specializing Scandinavian-style flat-plane carving.
Refsal was born and raised on a farm near Hoffman, Minnesota,
homesteaded by his Norwegian-immigrant grandparents. He began
working in wood as a young boy. His father, a carpenter and farmer,
and a woodworker uncle who lived nearby kept him well supplied
with wood, tools and encouragement. Since the 1980s, Refsal, who
speaks fluent Norwegian, has shared his knowledge of, and skills
in, Scandinavian flat-plane carving with thousands of carvers
through classes and presentations in the United States and Scandinavia.
His name is so integrally linked with the revival of this carving
style that it is rapidly becoming known as the "Refsal style."
